While, it's not elementary, the Geras books are very popular in middle
school- novelizations of fairy tales.  "The Tower" is Rapunzel.  All are
set in modern era.  All the girls (Rapunzel, Cinderella, etc...) are
friends at an English boarding school.  Of course, modern names are used
too- Rapuznel is Megan, I think, Bella is Sleeping Beauty.  You must know
the fairy tale to read the book, and watching for the parallels in modern
time is part of the fun.
