Great Canadian novel

Our 7th grade teachers are looking for a novel that would roughly
correspond to the Canadian study unit used by the social studies
department.  Something wonderful that ould be fun to teach, read and
ponder over!  The book must be written by a Canadian author and set in
Canada, but with no restrictions as to place or date.  Thanks in advance!
