Di, You might try _Shabanu_ by Suzanne Fisher Staples. It's a wonderful book for adolescents, about a girl growing up in a desert culture in the Middle East. This is my favorite discovery of the past year--it's lively and fresh and provocative (in the sense of provoking discussion among students). If you must replace _To Kill a Mockingbird_ (another of my favorites), this would be a worthy replacement.
