        So Demi Moore is reported to say that she's going to change the
ending of Hawthorne's novel to give it a "happy ending." and that it
doesn't matter because "nobody reads the book anymore anyway."

        That's funny.  The Scarlet Letter already has a happy ending.
Maybe it's she who hasn't read the novel.

        Teachers who want to use a film version might seek the 1979 PBS video
miniseries filmed in Salem, Mass. that was totally  faithful to the novel
and is fascinating to view -- all four hours.  It starred Meg Foster and
John Heard.  I'm not sure, though, if it's commercially available.
