WAN: Do you have one?

Our district's technology dept is eager to gather up all "our" technology
money and use it to create a WAN. That will mean our campus technology
money is gone for this year and perhaps for years to come.  Has a WAN
been wonderful for your school?  Is it necessary or great to have in this
day and age? Please let me know about your experience (good or bad).
