library vandalism

I have recently noticed an increase in the amount of writing
and etching of names, initials and messages on the partial
wooden surfaces of the tables in my high school library. In addition,

strips of laminate are being pried up off the table surfaces. I know

that vandalism is a perennial problem and I have tried to keep
an unobtrusive eye on my library patrons, but I never seem to
catch anyone in the act. Does anyone have any suggestions to
control this problem?  TIA
