Operation Flying Carpet was the name coined for the mass immigration of the
Yemenite Jews to the Land Of Israel in 1949-50. The Yemenite Jews had lived
in Yemen since the destruction of the First Temple (586 B.C.E.) and had
adhered to the tenets of Judaism until the mass emigration. The pious
Yemenites had not been exposed to many modern accoutrements and, upon seeing
the shiny airplanes to bring them to their historic homeland, sensed the
realization of the Biblical prophecy, 'and I will bring you upon the wings of
eagles." The children were brought first to the Holy Land by the Jewish
Agency and, in the process, lost much of their religious observance by the
time their parents arrived causing great anguish and pain to this centuries
old community. Practically the entire community of 46,000 emigrated leaving
only a few hundred remaining.
