I just finished Silicon Snake Oil by Clifford Stoll. It is an entire meditation on the impact of technology and networks on society. His main question is: How do technology and networks truly help in our society? He goes on to suggest that in his experience, technology and networks do not bring people closer together, rather, they reduce relationships. In his final chapter (40 pages), he presents some strong arguments in support of libraries. He questions the present direction of education, libraries and the Internet. This book has been much discussed in Technology circles, but not sure if it has made it's way around LM_NET readers. It makes for some thoughtful reading.
