Dear Colleagues - Thanks so much for your detailed and most helpful responses to my query regarding Mandarin vs. turnkey automation systems. I received 15 responses, and will summarize points made; Looking at Dynix Scholar after 4 years of Mandarin which was "cumbersome and awkward to use" and required "15 individual steps to produce a bibliography." kcronn@mohawk.moric.org. Chosen to automate with Mandarin through their new cooperation with SIRS with a turnkey system...email Keelin Hayden at SIRS (keelinh.sirs.com) for info mstddsx@gsusgi2.gsu.edu Used Mandarin for 5 years now...outstanding support. fpentlin@hobbs.leesummit.k12.mo.us Chose between Dynix and Mandarin - liked M's flexibility, less complicated than Dynix chin@inforamp.net Have used Mandarin for 4.5 years - has strong tech support and is user-friendly.There is a Mandarin listserv. K12OCKZR@vaxc.hofstra.edu Have used Mandarin for 5 years - "very responsive to our suggestions And on enhancements." Now SIRS is available so kids can use inerface they're familiar with. LNICHOLS%ERIE@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU Chose Winnebago over Mandarin 4 years ao because it seemed clumsy then. rhinzman@outland.dtcc.edu Used Mandarin successfully at two new schools, in Va. and NC. Contact person: Linda Sue Dauphin (703) 503-7540 GSOLOMON@dpiogate.dpi.state.nc.us Mandarin is used a large school system in the Atlanta suburbs. Main problems: no key word searching in the subject field (???) and it is very menu driven. Less user friendly than Winnebago or Follett. jnix@moe.coe.uga.edu Chose Dynix because it seems to the the system of choice in independent schools. falib@transit.nyser.net Opened a new elementary school in 9/93 and went online the first day with MandArin. Has greater capability with networking to other systems. The kids use the OPAC constantly. Circulation system very easy/cataloging takes time. bae@umd5,umd.edu Ginny Marr Tabor Academy Marion MA 02738-1599 gmarr@a1.mec.mass.edu
