Placement of server w/modem

LM_Netters,

I am posting this for a friend whose mail program is down and cannot post.

The school's technology committee is working on connections within the
school. They want to include Internet access to the computer lab. A
phone line was installed over the summer, but in the main office, a
separate building from the lab. Moving the phone line would be difficult
since it involves the German phone company, etc. The proposed solution
is to run the network lines to the other building with the lab and set
the server with the modem line in the office near the phone line.

My friend wants input from others who have a server with a modem
at a distance from the other computers/lab.  Has it been a problem?
Would a separate server in the office attached to the lab or media
center's network work as well. Any thoughts pro and con appreciated.
