Subject: LCD Panels and Overhead Projectors - Summary

Several months ago, I posted questions regarding the quality and performance
of LCD panels and overhead projectors to be used for library instruction.
Here is the summary of the 40 responses that I received.

Half of those responding simply wanted to let me know that they could use this
information since their libraries were in the market for this equipment.
Panels that were repeatedly recommended included the Sharp QA1650 and the
InFocus LitePro 550 multimedia projector. In addition, several respondents
emphasized the need for a powerful overhead projector (with at least 4000
lumens) and/or a very dark room (in one case, installing curtains to cover
windows was necessary).

Hope this information is helpful.

Thanks to everyone who contributed.

LCD Panels Recommended

 Sharp QA1650 - $4800 - $6700 ****Recommended by several

"It has the capability of projecting full color, full motion images."
"Supports video and graphics nicely. Was told that the Sharp model has the
largest display area (8.3 x 6.2 inches, 10.4 inches diagonal).
"It includes a PCMIA memory card that lets you store images on the panel for
later display. That way, if you're planning to demonstrate your OPAC and
your system happens to go down, you could substitute a "canned" demo stored
on the panel."

Sharp 1150 ($3700), active matrix.
"If it were possible, would have gone with the more expensive
      1650 model."

nView Viewframe TFT Panel, Model NVW-S120 - $2000

nView ViewFrame Spectra C - $3600

InFocus Panelbook 550 - $5000

InFocus LitePro 550 Multimedia Projector - $7000
****Recommended by several
"Takes the place of the overhead and LCD panel, hooks up to VCR and
     computers."

InFocus LitePro 550 with Liteshow - $10,000
"Includes the above and includes a built-in computer. Everything
       in a box."

Proxima 8300 Multimedia LCD Projector

Eiki (sp?) Projection Unit - $8000-$9000
"One piece of equipment. Includes overhead and LCD panel."
     "Cost is $400 (!) for a bulb"
*******************************************************
Non-Color Panels Recommended

InFocus 1600 (one for, one against)
"Has 16 shades of grey."
"Satisfactory but peripheral data is hard to read. If projector is left for
one hour, fading is a real problem."

nSight Data Projector
"Looks just like a slide projector, has a built-in LCD panel, plugs into
video port of CPU. We do text, not graphics demos at this time."

InFocus 1600 LC
******************************************************
Overhead Projectors Recommended

4000 - 6000 lumen overhead
     "The brighter, the better."
Buhl model 2963 (5500 lumens) - $619
Buhl " 2900 " "

Dukane 4000
Dukane 40003 w/ wide angle lens - $633
