In response to Carla and flex schedule and book talks: In my school, we had a plan book for teachers to sign up for time. Once they signed, I would plan with them or ask them what they needed for their kids. It helps to publicize youy services, either through a friendly note at team or grade planning time, at faculty meetings, or just informally in the halls. Some programs make it really necessary for kids to always need to find "the next good book." Programs like Reader's Workshop, or Battle of the Books require that kids read a great deal and use the services of the library media specialist. Sometimes, I book talk a genre- mysteries that include animal mysteries, ghost stories, detective, supernatural, sports mysteries, historical mysteries, time change mysteries. In other words, something for everyone. Also consider boy/girl, multicultural, easier/more challenging, contemporary/traditional. I talk about 15-20 books, some in-depth, some in one or two lines. And don't forget to have the students bring pencil and paper to jot down ones they want to read next! Good luck, it's fun. Shellybell
