Origin of name of British currency

Several weeks ago I posted a request for info on Mt. Ararat.  My
daughter's social studies teacher, a dyed-in-the-wool "computers will
never last" person, was so impressed that he asked to "ask your mom to
ask those people if they know why British currency is called "pound sterling."

So, if you know, could you reply to me.  I will post to anyone else who
is interested.
