ANNOUNCEMENT! PLEASE REPOST FREELY ************************************************** MultiMedia Schools magazine In cooperation with NECC, The National Educational Computing Conference, 1995 Invite you to participate in the STUDENT TECHNOLOGY LEADERS COMPETITION ************************************************** The purpose of this competition is to honor outstanding students who have made exemplary and innovative use of information technology in their schools and communities. The competition will recognize individual students who in the eyes of their teachers and peers serve as technology leaders. This award will spotlight outstanding projects that are created and maintained by the students themselves. Two students will be chosen to attend the 1995 National Educational Computing Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, June 17-19, 1995. Winning students will present their projects to those attending the conference and receive an award. Modest and reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed for the winners and one chaperone each by MultiMedia Schools magazine. ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to all students attending either an elementary or a secondary school full-time in the United States. The school can be either public or private. Submissions for elementary grades (1-8) will be evaluated separately from those in the secondary grades (9-12). To enter the competition the student must be nominated by a teacher, media specialist, school administrator or supervisor. The nomination should address the following without exceeding 1000 words: -Student's name: -Student's grade: -Student's school and mailing address: -Student's e-mail address: -Nominator's name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address: -Description of student's technological contribution: -Description of how this technology supports learning either for the individual student or for a group of learners which may include adults: -Brief statement of why you feel this student should be recognized nationally: -Nominations must be postmarked no later than February 28, 1995 and sent via e-mail or U.S. mail to: Deneen Frazier Student Technology Leaders Competition 10 E. AWARD CRITERIA: Winners will be judged on the basis of the evidence supplied regarding the student's contributions to the creative and effective use of technology to facilitate learning. Criteria include: -Scope of the project or activity. We are looking for projects or activities that are effective learning catalysts either in the classroom or in the community. Preference will be given to those activities that help others learn. -Originality. We are looking for creative new ideas. -Student motivation. We are looking for projects or activities that were initiated by students and continue to be run by students. While the project may be supervised by a teacher, administrator or parent, we are looking for projects that are being managed directly by students and/or were founded and developed by students. -Student's verbal ability. Phone interviews will be conducted with 10 finalists. During these interviews, the student's ability to articulate and describe his or her project will be evaluated. -Parental permission. The winners must have parental permission to compete and, if selected, to travel to Baltimore, MD for the award ceremony in June 1995. -Eligible contributions can include innovative software use and development, essential hardware acquisition, outstanding courseware and/or curriculum plan development, and any other instructional application of computing or networking. (May also include video, cable or satellite TV.) -Participation in advising, mentoring, or training other students or adults will also be considered as a demonstration of student technology leadership. -Projects must be currently underway or very recently completed. those projects currently underway but which may be completed after 6/1/95 are eligible, pending sufficient documentation. From the 10 students selected for telephone interviews, two will be chosen as winners of the competition. **Nominations are due no later than February 28, 1995.** (See ELIGIBILITY section for details.) PRIZES: The two winners of the award competition will receive free registration and travel/hotel reimbursement for themselves and one chaperone to attend NECC'95 in Baltimore, MD on June 17-19. Winners will be expected to participate in an awards ceremony and student panel in which they will speak about the role of technology in their daily lives and demonstrate their own contributions to learning with technology.
