Ever read the interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights on expurgation???? Gene D Lanier, Professor & Director of Graduate Studies East Carolina University Dept of Library Studies and Educational Technology GREENVILLE, NC 27858-4353 919/328-6627 FAX 919/328-4368 Bitnet: LSLANIER@ECUVM1 Internet: LSLANIER@ECUVM.CIS.ECU.EDU ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- A librarian friend of mine uses the vandalism approach openly - she has her student assistants apply her school stamp to all the right places. Her assistants have a ball and the student body accepts it with good humor. I personally remove the center section and put out the rest of the magazine as usual. I've seen kids almost hyperventilate when they see the cover, but very few come up to the desk to complain. A couple of times I've been accused of wasting taxpayer money, but when I suggest that they invite the taxpayers in to complain to me personally, that ends the conversation. I've also had inflated offers to sell the section to raise money for the library. So, I tell them to have their parents come in to make the payment. Again, end of conversation. Actually, all of this goes on in good fun, and I get the impression that no one really expects to find the swimsuit issue in the school library, especially when I remind any complainers that we deal with jr. high as well as sr. high ------------------------------------------------------------------------------|- | | | Karen McLachlan, Media Specialist Internet: EHS_KM@ncocc.ohio.gov | | East Knox High School Voice: 614-599-7000 | | 23227 Coshocton Rd. | | Howard, Ohio 43028 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| On Thu, 9 Feb 1995, Doris A.
