??World War II pilot/New Guinea

Hello folks,
This search is for a colleague who is looking for people who may have
known the father she never knew. He was MIA in New Guinea 3/11/44 piloting
a P47.  She was born 3 months later.  His name was George Gaffney, member of
class 43G, Eagle Pass, TX (July 1943).  She is also interested in recovery
efforts for World War II plane wrecks along the northern coastline of New
Guinea. We are looking for suggestions for internet searching, related
bulletin boards, access to military archives, etc.
