My apologies to the group for not giving the full citation to the article I posted last week (and is repeated below). I still haven't been able to chase down my principal for the original, but the Xerox copy I have leads me to believe the article is from: Education Update (official newsletter of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 1250 N. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA 22314-1453, Tel 703-549-9110). The article is titled: "Developing Information Literacy: Advocates Promote Resource-Based Learning" and begins (I believe) on page 2 of the Febrary 1995 issue and is by Philip Cohen. The article also mentions that this is the first of a TWO-PART series. "Next month, Education Update reports on efforts to implment resource-based learning." I'm pleased so many of you found it of value. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Floyd Pentlin, Library Media Specialist / Lee's Summit High School, Div. 2 400 Blue Parkway / Lee's Summit, MO 64063 / VOICE: 816-251-3418 FAX: 816-251-3419 / E-MAIL: fpentlin@garfield.leesummit.k12.mo.us Steven Wright: "I installed a skylight in my apartment.... The people who live above me are furious!" *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* ----------------------------repeated posting----------------------------- My principal just handed me a terrific article that includes a discussion of the LMS' role in Information Literacy. It's significance comes from the fact that educators *outside* of librarianship are writing out our professional strengths which are integral to the education process. .................................. "The tools are in place...for curriculum specialists and library media specialist together to develop powerful curriculums that include engaging content while at the same time developing the skills of information literacy." .................................. "Library media specialists face a new school wide role that 'really allows them to assume the role of teacher,'...[LMSs] act as "modeling staff developers and co-planners" in resource-based learning...Instead of merely providing materials, they now help develop curriculum and work more individually with students." .................................. "Library media specialists bring useful experience...they often work with several students doing different projects simultaneously...'they can passon that experience on to theachers and help them assume the role of coaches and guides.'" .................................. Student schedules also need to be more flexible...student need access to information resources when a question comes up - not on a fixed schedule...The days of the weekly group marches down the hall to the library should be over..." --Article by Philip Cohen, p.2,3, & 8 Good stuff *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Floyd Pentlin, Library Media Specialist / Lee's Summit High School, Div. 2 400 Blue Parkway / Lee's Summit, MO 64063 / VOICE: 816-251-3418 FAX: 816-251-3419 / E-MAIL: fpentlin@garfield.leesummit.k12.mo.us Steven Wright: "I installed a skylight in my apartment....
