In response to: > The program began with 85 ninth and tenth graders, a coordinator, and > three teachers who were hired shortly before school started. We have been > developing the curriculum and the program as we go. We have now set aside > Friday, February 24, 1995, for an all-day joint planning session involving > the teachers, library staff and UCLA representatives. The program sounds great, especially if the coordinator or one of the three teachers is a credentialed school library media teacher, or if there are plans to bring one aboard with the next expansion of the class. Doesn't seem like it though. But I hope so. The single most important person in a school like you have started is the on-site, credentialed school library media teacher. The reason I suggest this is because that is the specific role of the LMT, who is educated and trained as both a subject matter specialist and as a school librarian. The LMT is able to both teach students within a particular subject or subjects, plus design information-based curriculum with the teachers which is based on sound principles of information literacy and the guidelines outlined in Information Power. I would also imagine that the LMT would make use of such resources as the Big Six Skills for Information problem solving, and bring with them extensive Internet experience as a user of the statewide K-12 Internet gateway service, CORE.
