Have you tried Mark Salzman's "The Laughing Sutra" (ISBN:0-679-73546-1) - from the Oxford Review " An enchanting story, full of humour and humanity." I heartily agree, wonderful Chinese fable, legend, philosophy, history, adventure and excitement. All in only 263 pages, in a Vintage Contemporary edition.
