I started reading Smoky Night to my students the week before the awards
came out)(just a coincidence) I discuss a little before i read-I also
tell them i lived in LA at the time of the riots and how i felt. Every
class(k-5) has been spellbound. I then talk a little about what they have
learned from the story and always point out that they shouldn't judge people.
it has elicited some interesting discussions.
