Dear Mary, Your post about a database of reference information from the internet for use in the library or classroom has been discussed in a class I am attending - Integrating the Internet into the Curriculum at the University of Washington. A couple of ideas came out of our discussion which I will share below. I think this is a very worthwhile project; however, one of the difficulties is the internet and its constantly changing addresses, gophers, databases and information centers. First, I would recommend a book called Using the World Wide Web by Bill Eager, $27.99. I found the book at Waldenbooks. This is the yellow pages to the World Wide Web. The Web cites are grouped according to subjects. Second, our instructor saves his favorite bookmarks on disks which he kindly copied onto disks and gave to us. Third, in the past while I surfed the net, I printed out projects and reference addresses and put them into paper folders and filed according to subject for teachers when they are ready to use the internet. I am now trying to collect bookmarks which point to reference materials in my email folders (thanks to my instructor's advice). In the past, I saved messages with addresses into my email folders. In class, we discussed the idea of an educational database created on the internet for reference materials. If we were able to get every LM_NET member to place just one reference onto the database, we would have - what is our membership now? 3,500 entries. Now that would be a valuable resource and wouldn't require a great deal of time and energy from each individual member. Cooperative efforts with large numbers can produce enormous results! And isn't this the kind of activity all you wonderful librarians are noted for? This would provide information not only for librarians but teachers and students and all our patrons out there in cyberspace!
