PROJECT IMPACT

Young people, teaching young people... An educational video

The Dream: Ben Gray dreamed a dream. He wished to expand the
knowledge of young African-American men and women.

He hoped to improve their self-esteem. He wanted to teach them
about their cultural heritage. Gray believed that teaching the
legacy and contributions of African-Americans would benefit
young black Americans, increasing understanding among all races,
and enhance multicultural education in the classroom.

Gray, a twenty-year Omaha television journalist, brought on
board others who believed in his dream. Mike Jones, also a
longtime Omaha journalist, joined as co-producer, and Bob
Armstrong, president and CEO of the Omaha Housing Authority,
entered as a partner in Project Impact. Together, these men set
out to fulfill the dream. The video is that dream realized.

The Success Story: The video depicts five black pioneers. These
successful men and women include Dr. Susan McKinney-Stewart, the
first licensed African-American female to practice medicine; Dr.
Charles Drew, a pioneer of modern blood preservation; Dr. Daniel
Hale Williams, the first person to successfully perform
open-heart surgery; Garrett Morgan, inventor of the gas mask and
the automatic traffic signal; and Madame C. J. Walker, inventor
of the hair straightening comb and the first African-American
millionaire businesswoman.

The primary reason for the success of this video was the
involvement and creativity of young people. These young people,
working together with our professional staff, contributed to
every aspect of the video's production, including filming,
location scouting, costuming, writing and acting.

Many young people put their hearts and souls into this project.
In this video, you will meet all of them. Project Impact
offered a unique opportunity for these young people to do
something positive and constructive with their lives.

Watch & Learn: Project Impact is the first in a series of
educational videos. The video is designed to give educators and
other exhibitors maximum flexibility in determining how to most
effectively use the video. Natural breaks allow the viewers to
study one character at a time. Characters are also grouped to
allow viewing by subject matter (medicine, business, invention).
And, of course, the video can be watched uninterrupted from
start to finish. The video is designed to maintain its
effectiveness and impact with any viewing situation.

The video contains a complete list of reference material for
additional research and learning projects.

Sponsors of the project include the State of Nebraska,
the Department of Housing and Urban Development,
the Nebraska Arts Council, and the Omaha Housing Authority.
