I have read and tried to compile many, but of course not all, of the
possible duties that we, in the library/media/information technology
field involves.
Shellie Mueller suggested some broad task-groupings:
*Clerical duties
*Information skills teaching
*Curriculum/resource teacher
*Technology
*Physical upkeep
*Literature
 If you find it helpful to use these, by all means, do so.

    The list is not complete, but it is a starting point for those of us
who need to update, rewrite, and write current(and visionary) job
descriptions.
  If all goes well, and you send your responses, a second HIT
can be posted later, so that we can refine the list.  This input came
from more than 30 different "netters" covering over 20 states.  It is
also being left up to you to separate the "professional" tasks from the
"paraprofessional" tasks from the "clerical" tasks.  It would be
interesting for you to give an unmarked list to you administrator(s) and
see how they would "mark" each task. I'm sure that would be very
educational for both of you.  Anyway, here goes:

- Initiates, develops, and implements policies and procedures for the
operation of the library media center (LMC) and manages the LMC in
keeping with school's and the school system's philosophy objectives and
needs.
- Provides leadership for the assessment and implementation of the goals,
functions, and priorities of the library/media program.
- Establishes and implements a sequence of goals for the short and long
range development of the library/media program.
- Leads in the development and implementation of a continuous evaluation
plan to identify strengths and weaknesses in the library/media program.
- Leads in the preparation and administration of the library/media budget.
- Evaluates, selects, requisitions, prepares for circulation, publicizes
and distributes all library/media materials and equipment.
- Participates in curriculum meetings.
- Attends and participates at faculty meetings.
- Works with teachers in planning and implementing those assignments
likely to lead to extended use of the library/media resources.
- Helps students to develop habits of independent library/media use.
- Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special
reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
- Motivates and guides pupils in the development of reading, viewing and
listening skills, attitudes and appreciation
- Establishes and maintains an atmosphere in which library/media staff,
faculty, and students work harmoniously at optimum levels.
- Leads in the implementation of an in-service program for faculty in the
utilization of materials, equipment and services of the LMC.
- Participates actively in library/media and other educational
professional associations on the local, regional, state and national levels.
- Engages in continuous study and in-service activities for professional
growth.
- Demonstrates emotional stability. [I laughed when I saw that!]
- Dresses and is groomed appropriately for the job.[Can this still be
enforced?]
- Performs other duties as assigned by principal. [Personally, I would
like to see this 'catch-all' phrase have limitations.  For instance, a
limit of 3 duties and before more can be added something has to be deleted]
- Supervisor of satellite dish use
- Supervisor of computer lab
- Coordinator of Whittle Channel One System
- Coordinator of closed circuit TV system
- Supervisor and seller of school supplies(pens, paper, etc)
- Coordinator of audio visual equipment
- Perform simple maintenance and problems(such as changing lamps) in AV
equipment
- Requisition AV/media supplies, library supplies, books, av and computer
software, and periodicals, and AV equipment
- Send out AV equipment for routine maintenance or for repair
- Provide Internet training to staff, students
- Provide library/media skills to students
- Inventory books, AV materials, AV equipment, computer software
- Serve as reference librarian to students, staff, administrators
- Weed periodical collection (keep only issues back ___ years)
- Weed print collection on a periodical  or on-going basis
- Prepare subject bibliographies to teachers on an as requested basis
- Work with other educators to design learning strategies that utilize
the various technologies to meet the needs of individual students
- Assist students in the media center and media center computer lab to
locate, analyze, interpret, and use information gathered from both print
and non-print sources for reports, assessments, research projects, and
other applications.
- Provide leadership in the integration of technology in all its forms
into the curriculum and teaching practices of the staff, including the
development of inservice programs, departmental workshops and other
activities as deemed necessary
- Represent, as necessary, the school or school department at professional
meetings and conferences related to technology
- Provide assistance to teachers and students in the production of
multimedia materials for the classroom.
- Provide leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use
of information technology, including, but not limited to:
     *electronic print and image-based communication systems
     *on-line communication between users and large databases at remote sites
     *compact disc and fiber-optic technology
     *and other broadcast technologies
- Serve on computer and technology planning committees
- Coordinate inservice activities and other training activities for staff
in the use of information technology
- Assist in developing the library/media and technology budget
- Assist the school administration in the management and maintenance of
computer systems throughout the school
- Operate and manage computer networks
- Consult and negotiate with hardware and software vendors to maintain
the networks, and the equipment
- Maintain inventory and control of all non-print resources and related
equipment and software
- Assist in selection, acquisition and cataloging of software and hardware
- Research and evaluate current technology; keep abreast of future trends
in technology
- Provide intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats
- Provide students with instruction to foster competence and stimulate
interest
- Receive, catalogue and process a wide variety of resources using various
cataloging programs as appropriate
- Maintain collection on a day-to-day basis, i.e. carding, shelving,
filing, mending, and general circulation procedures, etc.
- Maintain the card catalog, either in traditional or electronic formate,
as appropriate
- Prepare and monitor overdue lists using a database program
- Maintain library budget: prepare orders for resource and other
materials; maintain budget records using database program; follow
district procedures for receipt of goods, approval for payment and
closure of purchase orders
- Assist with supervision of students in the school library resources
center including book exchanges and noon hour library duty as required.
Prepare displays
- Maintain picture, pamphlet and vertical files
- Provide reference services to students and staff
- Direct and supervise parent volunteers, clerical and other support
staff and student assistants, as required
- Perform other related duties as required
- Develop and maintain Internet connection for faculty and student use
- Develop and maintain school-wide network to facilitate teacher and
student communication, provide easy access to student records and access
to other information needs
- Develop and maintain use of notebook computers for staff and student
use and as a tool in the curriculum
- Configure and manage technology lab with high end computer systems
(multimedia, desktop publishing, cd rom)
- Coordinate the computer support work of other staff
- Work with the students, faculty and staff to develop computer skills
- Work with vendors to maintain state of the art technology
- Assist in finding and developing technology grant proposals
- Assist teachers with technology related projects and recommend computer
supported software and hardware configurations
- Keep abreast of current and future developments in computer systems to
ensure that the school is positioned to make optimal use of such developments
- Organize all of the software disks and/or back-up disks for the school
into the old card catalog or electronically by type of software, type of
computer, teacher/room, origin, etc.
- the LMS shall work with discipline areas to incorporate research skills
into all programs throughout the building (high school)
+ Train and supervise student aides in:
    *daily operations
    *use of circulation computer
    *use of computer catalog
    *use of cd-rom
    *filing shelving and retrieval of books, magazines, vertical files, etc.
+ Check student sides' shelves for correctness in shelving
+ Confer with each student on his/her attitude, ability to work with
others, etc.
+ Work with general student population in use of computer catalog,
cd-rom, microfiche reader, and student copier
+ Work with general student population in locating materials in the
library (books, magazines, microfiche, etc.)
+ Assist and train parent volunteers
+ Other duties as assigned by the librarian
+ Design and prepare bulletin board and/or other displays
+ Print and distribute overdues/fine notices
+ Print and distribute library cards as needed
+ Repair damaged books, replace computer labels, etc, as needed
+ Input information into library computer
+ Maintain computer student information files (new, withdrawn, address,
change, schedule change)
+ Maintain computer files on lost materials with a view to returning
payments to students whose materials are later found
+ Laminate materials for school personnel and parent groups
+ Deal with the Xerox machine
+ Collect and maintain records of payment for fines and lost books and
make regular deposits
+ Record and report attendance each period
+ Supervise the day-to-day operation of the media center
+ Supervise and assist students with projects and assignments using
materials and technology.
+ Assist staff with materials and equipment needs
+ Process new materials for computerized catalog and prepare them for
circulation
+ Label and process new audio-visual equipment and check that everything
works properly
+ Be responsible for distributing and operating audio-visual and other
technology equipment
+ Inventory and distribute projection bulbs, video and audiotapes

+ Process and display newspapers and periodicals in the media center

+ Help with bulletin boards and displays in each media center
+ Help maintain a current collection of pamphlets in the vertical file
+ Handle requests for materials and information using inter-library loans
+ Help with record keeping and other clerical duties for media technology
department
+ Aide in audiovisual production
+ Handle off-air taping requests
+ Set counters/time on tapes and label each tape with programs
+ Maintain database of in-house video collection
+ Continually weed in-house video collection, erasing those programs
which no longer have broadcast rights
- Serve on advisory council of area instructional TV station (if applicable)
- Keep staff informed of new programs being produced and/or aired or offered
+ Process computerized math and reading cards for elementary teachers-
Assist students with research
+ Oversee magazine circulation for the high school and the professional
library, checking to see that subscriptions are current that magazines
are coming regularly and they are routed as requested
+ Keep statistics on magazine check out
+ Scan magazines for articles for the News Notes
+ Know the collection well enough to make suggestions at purchasing time
+ Help enforce limits set by staff for students' behavior in the LIC and
stay both visible and available at the entrance to the stacks
+ Keep vertical file current by clipping and filing newspaper articles
and pamphlets
+ Create book displays on current topics
+ Repair books and spine labels
+ Be familiar with the electronic indexes, both use and routine maintenance
+ Show library science students proper shelving and shelf reading
techniques and check their work for accuracy
+ Help with inventory and make suggestions as to which books need discarding
+ Enter new acquisitions on the computer and make any necessary changes
+ Assist in the library whenever possible
+ Take care of all correspondence for librarian
+ Type all units and tests for library science students
+ Close library whenever necessary
+ Shelve magazines
+ Type new book cards when needed
+ Prepare bulletin board displays
+ Take care of basic maintenance of copy machine which includes adding
toner, ordering paper, keeping change i coin box, and keeping records for
money collected from the machine
+ Run inventory list on IBM
+ Update on-line catalog
+ Discard books - takeout of computer, etc
+ Discard magazines that are no longer needed in the collection
+ Check books on cart when students check them in so they can be shelved
+ Send a notice to students who have not returned reserve materials on time
+ Assist students in finding information
- Organizes and manages library media center (LMC)
- Displays materials to encourage use of the LMC
- Maintains and disseminates instructional resources
- Maintains LMC records including acquisitions, circulation, and inventory
- Trains and supervises LMC personnel
- Encourages responsible behavior and respect for library resources
- Provides orientation for students and helps students to locate and use
resources
- Guides students in selection of LMC resources
- Supervises and provides for independent study and leisure reading by
students
- Serves as a resource teacher for LMC resources
- Works with teachers to integrate LMC resources into their lesson plans
- Demonstrates ability to operate media equipment
- Provides a relevant professional reading collection for the
professional growth of faculty and staff
- Creates an environment that promotes the use of the LMC by students
- Fosters increased use of LMC resources by the students
- Reviews (using available journals or contracts), selects and acquires
appropriate materials, supplies for LMC
- Processes, classifies and catalogs materials
- Maintains current instructional materials and equipment within
budgetary constraints
- Follows district/campus policies/procedures
- Maintains a professional relationship with school personnel
