I offer this year's predictions from Judy Freeman, author of *Books Kids Will Sit Still For* (Bowker,1990), who manages to accurately predict 3/4 of the winners each year: for Caldecott -- best illustrated: **Isaacs, Ann. *Swamp Angel* il. by Paul O. Zelinsky Bunting, Eve. *Smoky Night* il. by David Diaz Mahy, Margaret. *The Rattlebang Picnic* il. by Stephen Kellogg Schwartz, Amy. *A Teeny-tiny Baby* Lester, Julius. *John Henry* il. by Jerry Pinkney Polacco, Patricia. *Pink and Say* (could also qualify for Newbery) for Newbery -- best written: **Avi. *The Barn* Bauer, Marion Dane. *A Question of Trust* Hesse, Karen. *Phoenix Rising* Cushman, Karen. *Catherine, Called Birdy* Polacco, Patricia. *Pink and Say* caveat: remember, the terms of these awards state that the winners are selected by adults as the "best of kind", not necessary the most likely to b e "kid-appeal" titles. Happy reading! Alice H. Yucht <yucht@zodiac.rutgers.edu>
