Thank you to the thirty some LM_Netters who responded to the question
about how Culturegrams are handled in your library media center. I've
summarized the comments. Also several wanted more information on what a
Culturegram is. That information is at the end of the summary.

STORAGE
Vertical file -- 7 people put them in the vertical file. Some file by
country and others by continent. Several people provided brief records in
the search/card catalog.

Looseleaf/3 ring binders -- 13 people use this form of storage. In some
cases it was treated as one book and stayed together. In others, it was
treated as individual pamphlets within the notebook. One person suggested
that they be numbered in the notebook so they can be easily and quickly
returned to the proper spot. It also helps with inventory control.

Other suggestions included-- magazine box, ziplock bags, plastic crates,
duotang folder and pendaflex folder.

Several laminate them to help protect them as almost everyone that replied
commented what heavy usage they get.

CIRCULATION
The numbers were about equally divided on whether they are circulated or
only used in the library. Teachers were able to check out in some cases
but students were not. The Culturegrams were treated like either magazines
or reference materials as far as check out was concerned. Some media
centers make copies. (This depends on the way the Culturegrams are
purchased as to whether this is copyright violation or not).

In several cases they were barcoded individually with brief records.

Some recommending buying two sets, one that circulates and one that does not.

A sign out sheet on the inside of the notebook also serves as a way of
keeping track. Several reported not having a high loss rate, even though
they are heavily used.

For those of you wanting information on what a Culturegram is: Each
Culturegram is a four page pamphlet that gives information on a country's
society, people, customs, lifestyles, holidays, etc. They are available by
individual countries or by complete set. They are available from the David
Kennedy Center out of Brigham Young University. 1-800-528-6279.
