1940's fiction and nonfiction

Hi,

I have a third grader teacher working on a unit on WW!!.  The students are readi
 ng Snow Treasures and Number the Stars is the read aloud selection.
The teacher is in need of nonfiction books that depict life in the USA during WW
 II and any fiction books with this time period as the setting.
I will summarize all suggestions and post a HIT.
Do any of you recommend a bibliography of History Sources. I know there are some
  published by ALA, ect.
