Help with a book title

This is my first posting.  Please help a 3rd grade teacher with the title
of a book that she can't remember.  It's about some type of creature
(animal) that comes across as snotty, stuck up, and unfriendly to his
animal friends.  Throughout the story, though, the shy loner of a
creature delivers small gifts to his friends but doesn't sign his name.
In the end, they realize that he's a great guy, just shy and quiet, not
snooty after all.
