I am trying to subscribe to the Count on Reading listserv. I have followed
the directions for subscribing but each time I follow them, I am told to fill
in the subject line in the mail. (The directions say toleave it blank.) What
to do?
Thanks,

Greetings Carol and colleagues,
I am very new on the net, surfing through FIRN in Florida. This is
fantastic. I just went to the Library of Congress to gind information on a
favorite, long out of print book. Now I am reading mail on LM-NET from
librarians all over the country-and beyond. I just printed out a request
for gr. 3-5 keypals from a librarian at an elementary school on Misawa Air
Base in Japan. I plan to post a mail box in my library and ivi invite
interested students to participate. (We don't have modems at school yet,
but I can type messages and print out replies at home. Anything to give
our students access and get them excited.) Have fun!!!

I'm sure that many of you received a copy of the Governor's lottery
requests and noted the exclusion of Internet access. I'd like to
encourage you to write your legislators if you are concerned that
Internet access be provided to schools in Georgia.

If you will send me your email address, I'll compile a listing of
media specialists in our state with email access and share it with
you. Perhaps we can us this address list to quickly share news as it
comes out of the legislature.

Subject: Needs Assessment Tools

I am in a Library Media Certification program at Wright State Univ.
and would like some assistance with an upcoming project. We are
to perform a Needs Assessment for a library media center. I am
having trouble locating assessment tools. I have reviewed many
journal articles which talk about assessment but do not provide a
worksheet for actually performing one.
I am particularly interested in the following areas: the collection,
LMC staff, budget, program, technology and the facility.
Thank you.

Has anyone used the CD ROM Voyager II for the Macintosh? Was it worthwhile
and would it be appropriate for 5th graders? We are looking for a CD ROM

feedback on the Voyager CD ROM. Thanks in advance.

Last year, the American Library Association had a recorded message that
listed all of the Newbery, Caldecott, and Corretta Scott King Award books
and Honor Books. I remember it being available right after the
announcements. I called ALA (800-545-2433) and they had a list of recorded
messages to choose from. I'm not sure if they're doing it again this
year, but it was really helpul.

Also, do you know if *emergency* or *temporary* certificates
are being issued? I have a life cert. in AV Media, but
I would like to know what would be needed to be certified
as an elementary classroom teacher?

Thanks in advance. Please reply directly to me.

I have been asked to put together a rubric to assess how we are doing with

the use of technology, but would like some advice from some of you who have
rubrics or other forms of assessment in place. What really works for
assessing the use of technology?

Subject: ?? VA and NC Media jobs, etc

Hi, My family (myself, 3 adult daughters, and spouses) has decided we
want to live together and will pick up and start over somewhere. Right
now, the areas that seem to meet most of our criteria are
Charlottesville, Va., Charlotte, NC, and the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill
area. Anyone in those areas willing to talk to us?
I have an MLS and 23 years in elementary Media Centers. What are
the chances of getting a job? Around here, no one would look at me since
I would be too expensive. We also have many questions about the areas,
culture, growing season, insects, etc.
If anyone is willing to share your impressions and opinions,
please contact me at patw@umd5.umd.edu.
Many thanks in advance! Pat Wang

Subject: CATALOGING HELP

I need some advice about cataloging books concerning World War II.

Should books about Midway, Hiroshima, Artic Sea battles, & others that
deal with areas outside of Europe still be classed under 940.54 or should
they be placed under their own geographic area (i.e. Japan - 952.06 OR
Midway - 990.969).

Also, what about the book "On Borrowed Time" (?940.53?)

I still have much to learn about cataloging!!
