Dear LM_NETTERS,
You really came through, again!! I got many replies to my request
for ideas for magazine circulation procedures. Thank you all for your time
and assistance. :-) Following are the general ideas:

**Temporary Barcodes:
~Use temporary barcodes and key in the title and issue date as needed.

**Permanent Barcodes entered as "Magazine" for title:
~Barcode each envelope as "Magazine." Record the title and date on the
envelope each time it is checked out. (Can also be done for
Pamphlets/Vertical File.)
~Barcode items as "Magazine" and clip the periodical request form to the
scanned barcode (on a card) and file by title.
~Use an old book pocket with a barcode on the front. The barcode is
recorded as "magazine". Make up old book cards with magazine titles on the
top. When students check out, they place a title card and their magazine
request slip inside the pocket and the barcode on the pocket is scanned. The
entire pocket is filed.

**Permanent Barcodes entered with the actual magazine title as the title:
~Barcode envelopes or bags by magazine titles. Also put the barcode number
and magazine title on an old book card inside the bag. When the student
checks out, they take out the card, write their ID # on the line and then
add the magazine date, and hand in the card. The barcode is scanned and
records the title, the other information is filed on the book card.
~Make barcodes for all titles and dates and place in a rolodex or on sheets
by title. (4 years of back issues were kept, then barcodes reassigned.) Scan
the barcode for the appropriate magazine and issue.
~Make barcodes for all magazine titles (number needed for each magazine
title depends on your circulation)and put either on cards or on envelopes
to scan. Don't worry about what issue it is, just scan in the magazine title.
~Barcode a book card and enter it as the magazine title. Place the scanned
barcode in a pocket in the back of the magazine. Remove it when the
magazine is returned.

**Permanent Barcodes
~Barcode each magazine as an individual item, like you would for a book.

**Protecting the magazine:
~Use ziplock bags.
~Use laminated manilla envelopes.
~Use Tyvek/Tyvec envelopes (2 people said they were practically indestructible.)

**Assuring the magazine and bag or envelope are returned:
~Make the price for replacing the magazine high so students are more likely
to return the magazine.
~Clearly mark the envelope with "Return to the Library Media Center" so if
it is found, it can be returned and not thrown out.
~Tell students that the magazine is only considered returned if it comes
back in the envelope.
~Only make a certain number of envelopes. When a student wants a magazine,
tell them that no more magazines can go out because X number of students in
their class have not returned the magazines they have and therefore, there
are no more envelopes.
