Karen Schneider's suggestion about a trap door made me remember a story I heard as an undergraduate about a hundred years ago. Supposedly, the public library in a small town was weeding the collection, but "helpful" townspeople kept rescuing the boxes of discards from the dump and returning them to the library. Nearby, a new bank building was going up, and so one dark night - the night before the parking lot was to be bulldozed and paved - the boxes of discards were buried, never to return again!
