Dear Colleagues, We have a parent who is beginning a challenge against a book that is part of a series widely used by our P.E. department in teaching health, as well as students who are seeking information on debate topics. The book is MARIJUANA: ITS EFFECTS ON MIND AND BODY. It is one of 25 volumes in a set of books entitled the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS, published by Chelsea House in 1986. It is a straightforward, informative series. The parent who is filing the complaint says "we are giving these youths too much information that is detrimental and not enough that is constructive." She goes on to say that "This is no different in my estimation than having THE ANARCHIST'S COOKBOOK which tells youths how to make bombs..." THEREFORE, do any of you have this series of books in your middle school and have they ever been challenged? Looking forward to any and all opinions on this book and series, I am, Sincerely yours, JJ Towler -- --/ JJ Towler jjtowler@pen.k12.va.us //\ ____/ /\( Library Media Specialist, J.T.
