I'm sorry I did not get back to all of you who asked for help. Here are
step-by-step directions from Carol Harma:
Preparation: attach cord to computer: this requires crawling, lying under
and behind computer. It also requires a small screwdriver. Once it is
attached, leave it there until inventory is completed. Locate the manual:
Should it be required, the manual is in the Follett Supplements volume. It
is before the section on inventory and is entitled: Portable Scan Plus.
(For those of you who have the 7.82N version like mine, this is on your
computer's main menu).Copy portable scan plus disks: (found with Circ. Plus
masters). Make as many as needed. (Carol Harma made 8 and used 7). It is
ok to reuse last year's disks. (My note: I understand that you should use
double density disks) (Carol's note: to copy disks, command is COPYDISK).
If you have the 7.82N version, go to main menu, choose Portable Scan Plus,
put any formatted disk in computer).
Begin inventory. From the Circ Plus menu, select 6: Inventory. Select 2:
Begin a New Inventory. This will reset all items from MARKED to UNMARKED.
Doing inventory: Starting the Machine: Press the on/off button. If the
main menu does not appear, press D (exit) until you return to the main
menu. You may have to answer NO (key on bottom) to some questions to get
there. From the main menu press ! for inventory. Begin scanning barcodes.
Scanning: The PHD requires a different touch than the computer wand. A
very light quick upward motion is most effective. Set aside any books that
do not scan after 5 tries and enter directly at the terminal. (I timed
around 3 minutes to do a full shelf of picture books). Dumping data: Attach
the PHD to the connecting cord. Make sure the printer is on and ready.
EXIT CIRC PLUS to the master menu. Insert one of the Portable Scan disks
into the A drive. Select 8: (to get to Scan Plus Menu) You will need to do
SETUP each time you dump so select 3, then select 1: Inventory. Dewey
Difference - hit return to select No Shelf Check. Marking - ON - ESC back
to main menu. Select 1 (Read PHD): Select 2 (Inventory)
(Override error message about erasing data). TURN ON THE PHD to its menu
and select E (send) Answer NO to first questions and YES (enter) to
Inventory. At the READY TO SEND? prompt ENTER (YES). Transmission should
begin. Stay near the computer as after an initial reading an [sic] ENTER
is required to continue. Without shelf checking the reading an ENTER is
required to continue. Without shelf checking the entire process takes 10 to
15 minutes. Printer will print any errors. These will be books on the
shelf and checkout out, books checked out between the time inventory was
recorded and dumped, and books NOT IN SYSTEM. Erase: After the dumping is
done, remove the disk from the drive and file it. Remove the PHD from the
connecting cord. Turn on the PHD and go to the main menu. Choose F
(ERASE). Answer NO to some questions and YES to inventory. When prompted
you will need to hold down the ENTER key for 3 beeps to erase data. Now
begin again. Recharging batteries: when the PHD signals BATTERIES LOW,
plug it into the charger overnight.

Happy Exploring!
