On the matter of the fans in some projectors (whether they are overhead,
filmstrip): I worked for an audio-visual service once that had a theory
on the cooling of bulbs. The guy that espoused this theory was had to
supply his rental equipment with bulbs, so his advice was considered, at
least. He thought that the type of fans that were optional were a kind of
"idiot button". He believed that the bulb should be allowed to cool at
its own rate for a longer life. Of course, the fan had to run during
operation to keep it cool, but when the bulb was turned off, the fan
should be, too. In other words, the fan was there to run as a last resort
IF one had to move the equipment right away. Better to let it sit still
after use to cool instead of "force cooling" the bulb. Well, that's one
theory.
