        Regarding your request for a positive African-American protagonist:
David Haynes'  Right by My Side.  It is published by the New Rivers Press
and was a Minnesota Voices Project Winner.  This novel is a stunner!
We suggested it to our S.E.E.D. group at school and it was very enthusiatically
received by the faculty.  This is a major new voice.  Characters are well
defined with complex shadings.
        Hope you enjoy.  It is always a pleasure to recommend my new favorite
book.
