We do not use the patron barcodes to scan.  Our students learn their
number and say it when they come to the desk.  We do have a photo album
arranged by classes with their barcodes arranged in alphabetical order
out so that the students that can't remember their number can look at it
before checking out.  It is much easier for us to type in the number than
to physical handle patron barcodes.  When we move kids from one class to
another at the beginning of school, we rearrange the barcodes and then
update locations.
