GEN: "Anglo"

I was wondering if anyone out there has any idea where the term "Anglo"
started being used for "white" people. As a person of European descent I
have had this term used to describe me in a derogatory manner-so I assumed
it was a racial slur, however, I am seeing it more and more often in
literature. Anyone have any ideas about this?

P. S. I do not want to start a debate or offend anyone, I just want to know
where this term came from!
