I've done the Cat in the Hat by wearing all black, pinning on a black
tail, wearing a gigantic bowtie made of two red fabric-coverd hangers
wired together, and a gigantic top hat made of red-white striped and
laminated construction paper stapled to a black hat at the brim. Paint
on whiskers and you're a hit.
I also have a Mother Goose costume with a long black with orange print
skirt that I stapled poster board (2' wide) around the bottom to make the
skirt stick out. Then I wear a frilly blouse with a apron that has a top
and ruffles at the bottom and at the sleeve (it's orange). I also have a
shawl I wrap around my arms with a black (recycled witch's hat) and a
long narrow tan colored scarf sewn to the tip of the hat. I carry a
basket with a stuffed goose and a Mother Goose book. I bought it all at
Salvation Army. Oh, yes, I paint on big rosy cheeks and have big shoe
buckles on my shoes. The kindergartners really enjoy her!
