Our school system is just outside the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
Two weeks ago our Supervisor was in the position of having to defend
the present policy of having one professional in each school library
media center (I am the one professional in a school with 2,000 students;
my one media assistant does "hall duty" two periods out of eight
instructional periods; I am responsible for av equipment and the Media
Center's LAN.) Once we recovered from the stunning news that the
decision-makers were considering "operating" the media centers with
clerical assistants, we immediatly attacked the LM_NET Archives for
support data. The six secondary media specialists met and, armed with
LM_NET messages on many topics, developed a brief document which outlines
the instructional role of the professional and its impact on student
achievement. Our Supervisor presented it to the Superintendent and his
assistants, and it was decided that our positions would be retained.
We are forever grateful to our LM_NET colleagues for their generosity in
sharing letters, policies, and research titles; you have made a difference.
