After reading about serveral challenged books on LM_Net recently (Brave New
World and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes were among them), I thought you all
would like to see the posting below, which I just read on the ALAOIF net. I
would add again that if you contact the publisher of whatever title is being
challenged, the publisher will often help by sending you good reviews of that
title, and reviews are kept on publishers' files for quite a while.

I hope this information is useful:

The Sept. 95 issue of _School Library Journal_ lists some new
resources folks might like to know about.

I just received a copy of "Books on Fire: A Bibliography for
_Thou Shalt Not Read: Banned and Challenged Books for Children
and Young Adults_" Put out by the Assoc. of Children's
Librarians of N. Cal., it is 64 pages of annotated bibliography
listing a representative sampling of banned children's books,
with a list of Internet resources, a directory of groups to
contact, and (best of all) about 20 pages of letters written to
ACL by the authors of some of the banned books.

It costs $7.50, and is well worth it! Order from:

Assoc. of Children's Librarians of N.Cal.
               P.O. Box 12471
               Berkeley, CA 94702

Also listed was a free "First Amendment First Aid Kit" put out by
Bantam Doubleday. Order from:

               Bantam Doubleday Dell
               Books for Young Readers
               1540 Broadway
               New York, NY 10036
