Many, many thanks to those of you who contributed suggestions of titles to
offer in place of Stine and Pike. As Helen Seagraves wrote, "books with
that edge of fear to give them spice".  Libraries in very conservative
communities may have problems with some of these titles because of their
subject matter (ie., witchcraft, the occult) but then that may be true of
the entire horror genre. I make no distinction between those suitable for
middle school/junior high and those for more mature readers.
