Dear All: Many of you responded to my request for a social studies list in June. I'm sorry I've been lax in responding to those who asked for the information to be posted here. I found out that The Children's Book Council offers the following: Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies 1995 (published in Social Education April/May 1995) 150 titles K-8 $2.00 Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children in 1995 *from Science and Children, March 1995) $2.00 Each is $2.00 and send a stamped 3 oz. self-addressed 6" x 9" envelope to CBC, 568 Broadway, Suite 404, New York, NY 10012. Thank you to the many people who responded with the above answer. I ended up finding the issue of Social Education at a local college library and photocopying it. I probably should have supported CBC and sent them the money!! Here's a couple of people with different responses: From: K12OCCZC@vaxc.hofstra.edu (CAROL CROCE-LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST) I received lists of books with bibliographies: PermaBound Books has a catalog called Linking Literature to the N.Y.S. Social Studies Curriculum K-12...it has great books listed. Wiltz, John E. Books in American History: a basic list for High Schools. Bloomington: Indiana University Press. 1964. Kirby, David K. American Fiction to 1900: a Guide to Information Sources. Detroit: Gale Research Co. 1975. Howard, Elizabeth Fitzgerald. America as story: Historical Fiction for Secondary Schools . Chicago: ALA, 1988. Logasa, Hannah. Historical Non-Fiction: An Organized, Annotated, Supplementary Reference Book for the Use of Schools, Libraries, General Reader. Brooklawn, N.J.: McKinley Pub. Co. 1964 From: rgilbert@llwmht.ll.pbs.org (Ruth Gilbert) I received this address for a good comprehensive list: National Council of Social Studies P.O. Box 90363 Washington, D.C. 20090 They publish a list in the journal Social Studies and the Young Learner. Thanks to everyone. Enjoy this year at school. ( I unfortunately left my post in Clarkstown to return to the familiar teritory of public librarianship! BUT the opening at my school is still available if anyone is interested!!!)
