CURRICULUM IDEAS
USING THE INTERNET

Science

Weather
Have students from all over E-mail the high and low temperature in their
town
for a certain day. Compile, post, and share.

Nutrition
Collect regional nutritious recipes that would be easy for kids to prepare.

Find a class who would be interested in recording what each kid eats for
dinner on one certain date. Both classes exchange results.

Plants - Herbs
Make an herb garden. Grow herbs that can be used in recipes from countries
all over the world. Collect recipes using herbs that come from other
countries, from one's birthplace, etc. Put the recipes into a cookbook and
have a multicultural food festival using the herbs that the kids have grown.

Pollution
        Collect pollution pointers (hints on how to keep our environment cleaner);
pollution ponders - concerns for the future; and pollution posers - questions
to consider while doing this unit.

Weather Prediction
Use a national weather service site on the Internet. Choose some different
localities, and compare the predictions of the Internet site with the actual
weather for a certain date.

Earthquake!
Last spring many of us experienced quite a jolt, as a Green River area trona
mine explosion rocked our community. After we realized what had occurred,
teachers and students immediately accessed the Internet. What did we find?
Immediate information that gave the location of the epicenter and the Richter
Scale registration. Each day, in fact, earthquakes, however minor, occur. Send
students to the Net to monitor daily occurrences and plot their locations to
which which areas of the world experience the most earthquake activity.

Creating an Ecosystem
Students searching the Internet often locate names of scientific researchers
who have offered their expertise to those needing specific information. A
group of students studying global science were searching for information on
the Creating an ecosystem, continued

rain forests, in order to build their own ecosystem for a class project.
Just
completing a subject search using the webcrawling searching option on
Netscape, found them a scientist researching the rain forests, who also
happened to have an e-mail address. The students listed particular questions,
and sent their message directly to the researcher. His responses were sent the
next day to the one of the student's e-mail address.

Social Studies

Collect greetings and one interesting fact from all the states and post on a
U.S. map or bulletin board.

E-mail others in your state to find out information about different
localities.

Collect greetings from all over the world and post the messages.

Planning summer vacations--working on map skills and states.
Collect information from a native's point of view. Ask them to tell you
what
we would like to see and do in their state. Also ask about interesting facts,
places or events in their state that would not be found in an atlas,
encyclopedia or almanac.

Collect picture post cards from different states and post on a bulletin board.

Western European cities
Choose 10 cities in western Europe to visit for an "imaginary trip." Ask
people in each of these cities to respond by telling about their city and what
kinds of things they would recommend that a visitor to this city do. Ask them
to suggest places to visit in their city.

Oregon Trail
Find out information about towns located on the Oregon Trail.

States survey
Ask for answers to the following questions:
                1. What is the strangest thing that has ever happened in your
            state?
                2. Use your 5 senses to describe your state.
                3. Who are some famous people from your state?

Presidential Primary
"I am working on a WWW page called Primary Destination New Hampshire, which
has information about the Presidential Primary. It is produced by two
newspapers in New Hampshire and has a wealth of information about all of the
candidates in the upcoming election, as well as information about past
elections, and access to not only our two newspapers, but information from the
New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor. There is also a forum for
discussion for adults, and a forum for students. The student forum is only
open to New Hampshire students, however anyone studying the elections could
benefit from the info. The address is http://www.fosters.com
                                                --Diana Greenleaf, New Durham School

Balloonin' USA
The world's first "interactive" hot-air balloon trek across the United
States
will take place this school year. Kevin Kuehn, the Assistant Superintendent
for the Douglas School District near Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota,
is the pilot who will regularly collect photos and information about each
state he visits, and post the information to the Internet. For more
information access the following address:

Creating a Home Page
The greatest opportunity the Internet offers is to learn from and share with
others. By creating a home page full of information about your class, your
grade, or your entire school or district, others learn about your curriculum,
as well as your geographical area. It is a great way to connect with others.
Several sites, such as Classroom Connect, offer space to schools to display
information and student work on the Internet for all to see.

Global Newspaper
Our 4th grade publishes a global newspaper. We solicit articles from 4-5th
graders in about 8 countries. Our kids edit, assemble it, and e-mail it to
numerous schools around the world.
                                                     -Bob Koechley, Belleville
Schools, WI

Current Events
Have students access the new CNN, and Casper Star web site to download
articles for daily national, international, state, and regional current events
to share at the beginning of each class session.

The Sixties
After determining a list of major events that reflected the time period
between 1960 and 1970, student completed subject searches on the Internet.
They found information on the Cold War, Kennedy's assassination, and
Woodstock. They also found information on Woodstock's 25th anniversary
festival, and were able to compare the two events through photos and film
clips.

Wyoming Government
One requirement of Bill Thompson's senior government students at Green River
High School, is to complete a search using the state server, Ferret. Students
can find a list of state legislators, the governor and other state officials,
to whom they can send e-mail messages. They are also able to follow the
legislature, and the status of bills.

CARL
Access to the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries allows students to
search the library collection and the University of Wyoming,
CARL, continued
as well as many other major universities. Students can research the card
catalog, as well as a periodical collection, and borrow materials for any
subject via library loan.

Language Arts

Reading Week-Passport to Reading Fun-Read Your Way Around the World
Collect messages about favorite books and/or authors. Post these messages on
a world map.

Story Problem Book From Around the World
Collect story problems written by different classes. Story problems should
be
written to reflect the native character of the area the author(s) is from. An
example would be: Many years ago Mr. Sharp planted 6 cottonwood trees along
the Green River in the town of Green River, Wyoming. Mr. Smith also planted 7
trees along the river. How many trees were planted by both men?

Share opinions of favorite books and swap bits of geographical information
with others.

Newspaper Day - May 17
Collect news items from classes from around the world for a class newspaper.
News items can be on any topic of interest to the kids in the area where they
live. Items could be global (environment, animal welfare, etc.) or local.

Exchange lists of spring words that start with any of these letters:
 S P R I N G.

Interactive Read-In
A day-long reading project for grades kindergarten through high school, to
integrate the language arts curriculum and telecommunications will take place
in February. The project includes information shared via America Online,
Kidsphere, and the LM_NET. For information, contact Jane Coffey, Project
Director. E-mail to AFCJane@aol.com

Economics

Link up with another class to do one of both of the following:
        1) Each class would bid (to a semi-fictional company) on behalf of their
hometowns, to become the site of a new industry or event (such as a new auto
plant or the Olympics).
        2) Have the classes exchange information about their cities in order to find
the better place to start the given business.

Foreign Language

"I have a student print out Spanish daily newspapers from Mexico, Costa Rica,
Equador, and Madrid. The teacher loves it, the kids love reading about "El
Bulls," y Miguel Jordan. It lets advanced students move ahead alone. It's a
major hit, and not possible any other way. "
                                                --Bob Koechley, Belleville Schools,
WI
