I want to thank everyone who helped on this one. Major concensus seems to
be the following:

For a small Elementary school K-6 the essentials are:
World Book Encyclopedia
1 or 2 other good general encyclopedias
2 or 3 different atlases
Guiness Book of World Records
Webster's 3rd Int.Unabridged Dict.
4 other dictionaries of various levels
Bartlett's Familiar Quotations
a Biographical Dict.
a Geographical Dict.
Kane's Famous First Facts
Jr. Book of Authors series
an animal encyclopedia
Brewer's dict. of phrases
Bullfinches Mythology
a good poetry anthology

It was suggested that later as money becomes available the following
should be added:
Thesaurus
2 almanacs
poetry index
topical encyclopedias
special almanacs

It was also suggested that I get ahold of a copy of Brodart's El. Library
Collection and or H.W. Wilson Children's Catalog.
