Try *Keeper of the House*, by Godwin. This book is about a woman in
South Carolina who decides to go into business with the best, most
elegant, house of prostitution to be found anywhere. It is a wonderful
character study about her and the young black girl she hires to keep
house--how the times change, the social climate changes and their
relationship grows. The book begins in the 30's (I think) and follows their
stories into the 60's. This was a selection of my book club. We all
enjoyed it very much. I've never read anything like it.
