I used to keep accession numbers (that was the way the previous librarians had done it, and I thought that the logic was charge lost book fees based on what the particular book cost -- later purchases of the same title may cost more (inflation) or less (paper instead of hardbound)) but since seeing that: 1. barcodes act as unique identifiers and 2. fees should cover _replacement_ cost I have eliminated one step in processing and done away with accession numbers. Now -- my head out ready to be struck!! -- have I done a bad or foolish thing?
