"...I have lessons on book care and book check out planned for this time (as well as stories). My principal and some teachers are a little upset about this because it has never been done this way. ..." I do book checkout the 2nd or 3rd week for Ks, first week for everyone else. First week I do introduction and story. Just getting them seated and lined up takes too much time to do anything else. We do send a letter home with the children with a brief explanation about what we do and book limits, etc... I make sure the parents have a way to get ahold of me for additional concerns and questions. Second week, instead of a story, I do a brief brainstorming with the kids on book care (place to put it, don't eat peanut butter and jelly, make sure adult sees your book {'Wouldn't mom like to help you read this book?}, that library books are like videos, you bring it in and get a new one, you don't swap with a friend... demonstrate where to put books if you want to make another choice.... Show where the checkout counter line goes. and that is it! We do reinforcement of that stuff (Sorta like a 'tip of the day') with each visit. I'm pretty sure it is not my hearing, but name tags sure help! Bob Eiffert Librarian at Image Elementary, Vancouver WA beiffert@egreen.wednet.edu
