Dear Group, Well in less than 24 hours I had 26 messages about sitting "Indian style with your hands in your lap" for K-5 studentss in a half hour storytime. The majority did not insist that their students sit that way, but many start the storytime in that position and then allow them to change. Many disapproved of the term "Indian style" , not thinking it was politically correct and prefered criss cross legs or something similar. Several were appalled that anyone could sit in that position, but a couple said that they require the same leg position for their storytimes. Many 3-5 graders sit in chairs instead of on the floor. One respondant seemed angry that I should question this requirement at all, saying I obviously must disapprove. I am a graduate student and plan to student teach next semester. I am only trying to gain information from multiple sources. I thank everyone for taking the time to respond to my question. It is all very interesting. I'm not sure what I will require of my future students but I have some time to think about it. Thanks again, Odile -- Odile Heisel oheisel@pen.k12.va.us Library Assistant and future certified media specialist (graduating from James Madison University in Spring, 1997) McGaheysville Elementary School McGaheysville, VA 22840
