Outsourcing

I agree, outsourcing that removes media specialists from the creation of
their data is wrong but outsourcing which incorporates the objectives of a
media center program can only be right.

We feel we have solved this problem by taking our portable LAN  on-site in
each media center to prepare the data as the librarian or library director
would like to have it.  Most often we work from the resources themselves and
not from shelf list cards so we are able to provide a MARC record database
that is totally accurate and is also a 100% conversion.  Usually we have a
"hit" in the 8.5 million record database we carry with us.  If not, we
create a record on the spot from the resource in hand.  At anytime in this
process, we can add essential information about the use of the resource in
particulary library units or even by particular teachers.
