December 7, 1996 This is Part 2 of the responses to my request for suggestions on inservice training for teachers. Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996 15:15:19 -0500 From: Joyce Rodgriguez <jrodrig@gilligan.esu7.k12.ne.us> To: Patricia Fontes <fontes@MEOL.MASS.EDU> Subject: Re: GEN:Inservice Suggestions We have been trying to designate more of our inservice time for technology and have found that small groups is a must. It is also less threatening to the staff if they feel comfortable with the people they are grouped with--it's easier to laugh at silly mistakes or wrong turns with people you know well. (That sounds trivial, but it works surprisingly well...) I think teachers (who are pickyplus to teach) are happiest doing rather than being spoken to; dislike feeling disempowered; prefer working with something that feels directly relevant to their subject area (a general encyclopedia helps with this if your collection doesn't yet have CD-Roms for all subject areas) and would rather be active than passive. And they like a nice lunch. General guidelines, I know, but I hope they help. What's the weather like in Massachusetts? 30 degrees Celsius here, hot as it always is for stocktake at the end of the school year (roll on those summer holidays, twelve days away and counting!) Several years ago for an inservice on library resources the library staff set up stations (on-line catalog, CD-ROM stations, whatever else you want to introduce them to) and made up questions (we used current student research topics) for each stations (we had the instructions we give to the students available for each station ). The faculty were divided into teams and had a time limit at each station to find the answers. We had some fun prizes for the winning teams and served refreshments afterward. Thanks to a great spirit of competition among our faculty everyone had a good time and got some hands on experience using our library resources. Good luck! We installed a new Windows NT Network, and was given no time to inservice! We must spend all of our inservice time deciding how to restructure. Does anyone realize the need to restructure has to do with the way information is coming to us (such as your new network)??? Enjoy your chance to show them what you have! Not all of us are that fortunate. You are on the LM_NET let them know how that has helped us (librarians) There are lists out there for every discpline+integration too. Go for it, you will suprise many as what you have ot offer!!! Each person having their own computer and being able to "do it" is critical. If this means dividing the faculty and doing the same session two different times, I would recommend doing two sessions. Present info, give them time to practice, present, practice, present, practice, ...... Again, thanks to all of you who responded. I definitely will be taking all of these suggestions under advisement! Sincerely, Pat Fontes, Library Media Specialist Sarah W. Gibbons M.S. Westborough, MA fontes@meol.mass.edu >
