Dear LM_NET friends,

I am going to China for a UN Conference on earthquakes
and public administration --'gone January 17 to Feb 2.
I won't be able to access e-mail of this address
during that time.
I am looking for accounts of children's experiences
(in their own words or reported by adults), as well as
myths and legends about earthquakes.
We will eventually put some of them up on our webpage, which
can be found at:

http://www.shore.net/~globalw/ungp/

We hope to gather earthquake stories/myths from around the world
and also to set up partner schools, whereby students will monitor
for the possible precursors of earthquakes as students
do in China. We are taking this s-l-o-w-l-y and hope that we
can make it happen eventually.

The name of the program is The UN Global Programme for the
Integration of Public Administration and the Science of Disasters,
and this is its first international meeting.
It is in the Department of the UNDDSMS and our UN liaisons are:
Ms. Gay Rosenblum-Kumar and Dr. Jeanne-Marie Col.
Douglas Ling of Fire Station Earth has put up a website for us.

1. Anyone have any earthquake stories from children(alive or
historic or in legend and from around the world) which they
don't mind paraphrasing and giving sources--for use on our website?
2. 'Know of any pertinent, interesting, authoritative
websites we might ask permission to link to?
3. Please be patient if I don't answer everyone's
E-mail right away. We do hope to make this a global grass roots effort.
4. Honest feedback on our site is requested please.
5. Anyone want to get my e-mail from the conference? No promises
because it is sometimes hard to get a line out. Also, I really
hope to get access to an account over there. (Too costly to use
my Boston account.) If yes, please give name/grades/town and state
of your school and the teacher or library media specialist responsible
for looking at your outgoing mail and sharing my mail with classrooms.
6. A teacher (or two) from California is (are) also going.
We hope to set up sister schools with schools in China already doing
monitoring for the precursors of earthquakes---We also hope to learn
more about this science and how the scientists successfully link up
with public administrators in disaster mitigation efforts.
7. One of our goals is to set up a small pilot project.
It is too early to know the answers to many questions yet.

Thanks, everybody.
Happy Holidays.
